Synergistic Effect of Multi‐Walled Carbon Nanotubes and Ladder‐Type Conjugated Polymers on the Performance of N‐Type Organic Electrochemical Transistors

Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) have the potential to revolutionize field of organic bioelectronics. To date, most reported OECTs include p-type (semi-)conducting polymers as channel material, while n-type are yet at an early stage development, with best performing electron-transporting materials still suffering from low transconductance, electron mobility, and slow response time. Here, high electrical conductivity multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) large volumetric capacitance ladder-type π-conjugated redox polymer poly(benzimidazobenzophenanthroline) (BBL) leveraged develop record-high performance. It is demonstrated that use MWCNTs enhances mobility by more than one order magnitude, yielding fast transistor transient (down 15 ms) μC* (electron × capacitance) about 1 F cm−1 V−1 s−1. This enables development complementary inverters a voltage gain >16 worst-case noise margin supply <0.6 V, consuming less µW power.
